The Depression of the Yappie (‘Escape From Plan A’ Ep. 39)

Jess, Mark, and Teen share their impressions of Wong Fu Production’s new YouTube series “Yappie.” The series explores the inner life of a well-to-do Asian American man in Southern California, and the cheery surface, there is an unmistakable undertone of the modern ennui and loneliness that pervades society. A somewhat more serious talk about depression and anxiety.

The following are edited excerpts from “The Depression of the Yappie,” the 39th episode of Plan A’s podcast, Escape From Plan A.

Let’s just say that [Phil Wang’s character] Andrew is fighting depression. I think he’s fighting depression.

— Teen

I like it the more I think about it… It’s sad that throughout the show Andrew is very isolated…even in groups he’s always pretty alone…except when he’s around his girlfriend. I have a problem with the construction of a type of masculinity that depends on femininity for its full expression.

— Jess

I will give WongFu a little credit that I don’t think that for the most part they are making things for a white audience even if they do have a large white audience. I’ll give them credit that I think they’ve always sorta targeted Asians and Asian America, so I’ll give them credit for that.
