The Plan A Pre-Oscars Party! Our Final Predictions ('Escape From Plan A' Ep. 15)

Eliza and Teen theorize about the 2018 Academy Awards, whether the frontrunners Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water, and Dunkirk are the only viable winners, or whether revised voting procedures give Get Out and others an outside chance.

The following are edited excerpts from “Oscar Theories”, the 15th episode of Plan A’s podcast, Escape From Plan A. This episode heavily references the following article by Eliza:

‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ Deserves Best Picture At The Oscars (And The Limits Of Callout Culture)
By Guest Writer Eliza Romero - The Oscars are my Super Bowl and this one will be a particularly good one because 2017 was a great year for movies.
Examining our own biases seemed to be a theme in this year’s Best Picture nominees. “Get Out” is the most obvious example: If there was a category for political statement of the year, that movie would win.

I could see Sally Hawkins winning for “The Shape of Water.” It’s a fairy tale, and there’s a lot of pressure, especially for white movies, to offer a fairy tale escape. I could see the Academy with all the older people in it, just being charmed... I could see them going with her because she just tickles that bone a little bit more, that older white man crowd, vs [Frances McDormand’s] woman-on-a-revenge-tour, Duke Nukem-style.
