With Trump’s abominable immigration policies creating child prisons and extreme deportations, the question must be asked: what is truly fueling all this? It’s not job loss. It’s not crime. It’s fear of demographic change. Teen, Chris, and Mark trace the rather easily discoverable trail of this “America as white nation” ideology and give their takes on the American moral obligation to allow immigration.

The following are edited excerpts from “Fear of Demographic Change and Racist Einstein,” the 33rd episode of Plan A’s podcast, Escape From Plan A.

It’s not just white nationalists or fringe extreme far right position. I actually feel something that’s underreported is how far the assumption that America is essentially white, essentially Anglo, is an assumption that liberals have as well that they don’t recognize.

— Teen

What’s also related [to this fear of demographic change] is homophobia and anti-reproductive rights… It’s not that big a leap if you think gay culture is destroying masculinity and if you define masculinity as fertility and raising a family as a patriarch, it erodes that… I get so annoyed when people say, “How can you be against abortion AND condoms? It makes no sense.” It makes perfect sense!

— Chris

I think when you essentialize the traits of freedom and other abstract traits to a particular ethnicity or race or peoples, that’s when you get into a problem of if you’re one of those racial or ethnic things, then you can’t be those other things that define a culture. Trying to separate those two is the key there.

— Mark
