Trevor Beaulieu of the Champagne Sharks podcast joins Teen and Jess for a deep dive into the Asian American rom-com “Always Be My Maybe” (available on Netflix). While met with widespread acclaim and an easy-to-love throwback sensibility, a closer look into this un-serious entertainment raises a lot of questions. “Always” takes the baton from “Crazy Rich Asians” in developing an American genre narrative of contemporary Asian Americans. But the racial aspect of the film does not exempt it from the built-in limitations of the rom-com genre itself.
